Tall
Ships Sailing into Toronto
Toronto will
be the only host for the
Great Lakes
United Tall Ships Challenge,
a race across
all five Great Lakes.
11
tall ships will come into Toronto on June
30 as part of the Toronto Waterfront Festival
on Canada Day long weekend.
The
tall ships are opened to visitors until July
4th, before sailing on to Cleveland, Bay City
Michigan, Duluth Minnesota, Green Bay Wisconsin, and Chicago.
The
Oldest: The US
brig Niagara is the last ship from the War of 1812 still sailing.
The
Most Famous: The
Amistad replica from the movie with the same name. Coming from Conneticut.
The Amistad incident happened in 1839 when 53 Africans bound for slavery
gained control of the schooner and demanded to be returned home to Africa.
The
Most Perilous Voyage: The
brig Roald Amundsen, the first German ship to sail the Great Lakes.
3 Years ago a crew of 48 left Eckernforde, Germany in February passing
through the sound that connects the Baltic Sea with the North Sea, to the
English Channel, the Bay of Biscay, France, to Portugal, sailed to the
Canary Islands, then across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. From there
they go to Halifax and up the St. Lawrence River arriving at the end of
June in Toronto.
The
Second Most Perilous Journey: The
Niagara 's trip from Pennsylvania to Toronto in two days through the Welland
Canal.
This is to
spread the word about the youth sailing training and to promote water conservation
around the Great Lakes.
To
Honour Our Veterans
who gave their
all we like to show them our models of the war ship models to remind them
about the times they spent during WWI, WWII, and the Korean War.
They appreciated this display in the past and hopefully will be able to
do so for many years to come.
The display
will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010
in the K-Wing
at Sunnybrook Hospital between 9AM and 3PM.
Please, register
your model with Ian Smith, Vice President
at
416.504-4380 or tlcwoodfinishing@yahoo.ca
Parking will be free
for the members with a registered model.
